Aromatherapy Play-dough

This play-dough really brings back memories..

My mom made it for us kids when we were little and we loved it! Unfortunately, she did not know about putting essential oils in it, but today, I can make play-dough for my kids that will assist so many health concerns all while making fun memories!

I know what you are thinking.. Why not just buy play-dough at the store and add oils to it? Well….. I guess you could.. But, I’m into cheap fun and this seriously is soo easy to make!!

Our little boy loves this play-dough and it is great, because I know what is in it, (unlike the store-bought kind) and he is getting the benefits from the oils, depending on what his need is. For instance, OnGurd for his immune system, Breath for snifffles, Wild Orange for anxiety, or Lavender for all things calming.

This is so easy, and so much fun to make too. Hear we go!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 cup flour
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • 3-5 drops essential oils such as On Guard, Wild Orange or Lavender.

(I will add a list of essential oils that are safe for children and some of their benefits at the end of this blog.)

Directions:

Mix water, salt and cream of tarter in a medium pan. Cook on medium-low heat stirring regularly until mixture is hot and the salt is mostly dissolved. Add vegetable oil. Stir in the flour. Cook stirring well until play-dough pulls away from the pan. Pour dough onto floured counter and let cool. Kneed the dough adding flour if it is sticking to your hands. It needs to feel like “play-dough” Now you can add your essential oils, and coloring (if you wish.)

Make a well in the dough and add your drops of essential oil and coloring and began to kneed and stretch the dough. (You might want to just latex gloves for this part, unless you don’t mind blue or green hands!)

(Now, this is made out of ingredients that are edible, but I am not recommending you let your child eat it. Salt, flour oil, ick! But if they happen to eat some of it it will not hurt them.)

Also, if it is left out for a while, it will start to dry up. (Store in airtight container.)

Another also, this play-dough is not synthetic, so it won’t last like store-bought. I recommend trashing it after 2 weeks.

I doubled the recipe and divided it into 4 parts and made each 1/4 a different color and different sent.

Some other essential oil options:

Clinical research shows that essential oils provide effective support for many childhood conditions.

I love the results I get using these oils on our children. Knowing that I can take control of my family’s health is so empowering!
